Compliance Settings

Enable cookie consent and configure privacy features

Dec 5, 2025

Privacy compliance is essential for any application that serves users in regions with data protection laws. The Compliance settings give you control over cookie consent and other privacy features.

Accessing Compliance Settings

  1. Navigate to System Settings in the admin sidebar
  2. Click the Compliance tab

Cookie Consent Banner

The cookie consent banner appears to visitors when they first access your application. It asks them to accept or decline cookies, helping you comply with GDPR, CCPA, and similar privacy regulations.

Enabling the Banner

To enable cookie consent:

  1. Find the Cookie Consent Banner toggle
  2. Click to enable it (the toggle turns on)
  3. Click Save Changes at the bottom of the page

When enabled, all visitors see a banner asking them to accept or decline cookies.

Disabling the Banner

To disable cookie consent:

  1. Click the toggle to turn it off
  2. Click Save Changes

When disabled, the banner won't appear. The system assumes consent is granted (or not required in your jurisdiction).

Important: Only disable this if you're certain you don't need cookie consent in your region, or if you're handling consent through another method.

How Cookie Consent Works

When a visitor makes a choice, their preference is saved in a cookie_consent cookie:

Choice Result
Accept Tracking scripts and analytics are allowed
Decline Tracking scripts are blocked

What This Affects

Cookie consent controls whether optional tracking and analytics scripts load:

  • Google Analytics
  • Facebook Pixel
  • Custom tracking scripts
  • Third-party marketing tools

Essential cookies (like login sessions) always work regardless of consent—they're required for the application to function.

GDPR & CCPA Compliance

Enabling the cookie consent banner is an important step toward compliance, but it's not the only requirement.

You should also:

  • Maintain an up-to-date Privacy Policy
  • Provide a way for users to request their data
  • Allow users to delete their accounts
  • Document what data you collect and why
  • Implement proper data retention policies

Note: The platform provides the technical tools for compliance, but you're responsible for ensuring your overall practices meet legal requirements. Consult with a legal professional if you're unsure.

Testing the Banner

After enabling cookie consent:

  1. Open your application in a private/incognito browser window
  2. Verify the banner appears
  3. Test both "Accept" and "Decline" options
  4. Check that the banner doesn't reappear after making a choice

Tip: Use your browser's developer tools to delete the cookie_consent cookie if you want to see the banner again for testing.

Common Issues

Banner Not Appearing

If the banner doesn't show after enabling it:

Possible causes:

  • Changes weren't saved
  • Browser cached the old page
  • User already made a choice (cookie is set)

Solutions:

  1. Verify the setting is enabled and saved
  2. Hard refresh your browser: Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Shift+R (Mac)
  3. Clear the cookie_consent cookie in your browser's developer tools
  4. Try in a private/incognito window

Banner Appears Every Time

If the banner shows on every page load:

Cause: The cookie_consent cookie isn't being saved.

Solutions:

  1. Check your browser allows cookies
  2. Verify your application's session configuration
  3. Ensure your domain is correctly set in .env (SESSION_DOMAIN)
